From the Archives
'Extracts from the February 1915 Christian Malford Parish Magazine'

The Rev TJ Weight writes: Our Parochial Roll of Honour has gained another name since last month, William Freegard having joined the Wiltshire Regiment.

With a deep feeling of honour and sympathy, we record the first loss which our brave men at the front have suffered. Private Albert Reginald Haines, C Company, 1st Royal Berks, is reported by the War Office to have died of pneumonia, at Boulogne, in the north of France, on the 9th of November. His parents, who live in one of the Ridgeway Cottages, are newcomers, and their son’s name was not in our Roll of Honour, but he had already served for seven years, and was called up with the Reserves at the beginning of the war.

The Archdeacon of North Wilts has very kindly promised to visit the School on Monday, February 15th and to distribute the prizes and certificates awarded to the children whose names follow:- Class 1: 1st, Benjamin Vick; 2nd, Florence Sargeant. Class II: 1st, Arthur Grainger; 2nd, Lilian Hillier. Class III: 1st, Winifred Gingell; 2nd, Joseph Powell.

Regular Attendance Certificates:- Highest possible, 410. Olive Gingell, 410, an unbroken record; William Hillier, 409; Alice Grimshaw and Henry Uzzell, 406; Morris Martin and Winifred Gingell, 405; Maggie Martin and Frederick Hillier, 404; Benjamin Vick and Joseph Powell, 403; Arthur Grainger and George Martin, 401; Hannah Uzzell, 400; Annie Powell, 399; Herbert Bridgeman, 398; Walter Hillier and Gilbert Gingell, 397; Minnie Martin, 396.

The children will sing their patriotic school songs during the evening, and the managers hope to have the pleasure of the company of their parents and friends at half-past six o’clock.

The Rector and Miss Weight had great pleasure in welcoming the children of the Sunday School and some parents and teachers at the Rectory on January 6th, the Festival of the Epiphany, for tea, and various recreations and amusements and the distribution of Sunday School prizes and gifts. The Rector very heartily congratulated the children on the regularity of their attendance during the past year. Those who stood highest for afternoon attendances alone were, in order:- Alice Grimshaw, Benjamin Vick, Edith Hillier, Arthur Gingell, Frederick Hillier, Arthur Grainger, Walter Hillier, Annie Powell, Evelyn Powell, William Hillier, Kathleen Hillier, Roland Hillier, Gilbert Gingell, Lilian Hillier, Dorothea Howell, Walter Ferris, Joseph Powell, Richmond Hillier, Winnie Gingell, Maud Hillier, Olive Gingell, Matilda Bryant.

For morning and afternoon attendance, the names in order, are:- Boys – William Hillier, George Martin, Arthur Grainger, Roland Hillier, Morris Martin, Benjamin Vick, Joseph Powell, Arthur Gingell, Walter Hillier. Girls:- Alice Grimshaw, Kathleen Hillier, Olive Gingell, Winnie Gingell, Violet Humphries, Matilda Bryant, Phyllis Dobson, Lilian Hillier.

Editor’s note. This extract relates to Christian Malford but is of general interest. Many of the family names continue within the village to this day despite the article being from a magazine from almost 100 years ago.

Mobile Libraries

This note from Ellen Blacker, The Good Neighbour Co-ordinator for Christian Malford, is of relevance to everyone.

Do you love reading? The Mobile Library service has been running in Wiltshire for many years and is appreciated by all who use it and its importance as a meeting place for neighbours is recognised too. From children’s picture books to large print, audiobooks to DVDs, there is something there for everyone and if it isn’t in stock at this visit, they will bring it next visit. It was, therefore, with concern that I heard that there is to be a review of the service as “reviews” often mean “cutbacks”, particularly in our current financial climate! However, Wiltshire Council recognise the importance of the service and have protected the funding for it. The review is to maximise the usage of the mobile service and ensure that it is being delivered to those areas with most need. They will therefore be looking at the usage in the areas currently covered. For current stopping points they need at least 4 regular users to make the stop worthwhile. Also, if there are other locations where a library stop would be beneficial and could fulfil the ‘4 regular user criteria’ then the Council would like to know, so either contact Wiltshire Council or call me and I will happily forward your thoughts. Of course, for those who are unable to access the Mobile Library, there is a Home Library service which operates throughout the County – call me for more details.

Using the Mobile Library is free and simple. If you have a library card which has been issued by any of the Wiltshire Libraries, it can be used on the Mobile Libraries. If you don’t have a Library card, take a form of identity showing your name and address to the Mobile and they will sign you up. Books borrowed can be renewed by phone (0844 4142270 automated 24 hour service) or by visiting www.wiltshire.gov.uk/libraries (you will first need to get a PIN from your library). All enquiries about mobile libraries can be answered by Rebecca Bolton on 01225 713706.

The Mobile Library visits Christian Malford and Sutton Benger fortnightly on Thursdays. The next dates are: February 2nd and 16th and March 1st, 15th and 29th.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

Village Hall Advisory Committee to the Parish Council An advisory committee is being set up as a Parish Council Advisory Committee (which does not have executive powers but may give advice to the Parish Council). It’s purpose is to discuss and report back to the Parish Council on the future options for the village hall. It’s members are to be councillors and non-councillors and will comprise;- Parish Council members Allan Glass, Joanne Fawcett and David Mortimer; Village Hall Committee members Phil Hines and Paul Blower; residents David Gales and Gavin Calthrop.

The Parish Council did not meet in January. The next scheduled meeting of the Parish Council will be on 7th February in the village hall starting at 7.30pm.

Acorns News. The children have settled back in after the Christmas break and are going to spend the next few weeks learning about animals. The indoor play house has been converted into a Vet’s where the children can treat their poorly pets. They will also be learning about Noah’s Ark and will be creating a display around that theme.

A number of the children have taken the opportunity to try our cooked lunches, prepared for us by Christian Malford Primary School. These have proved popular and we have received some positive feedback.

In March we are launching a monthly draw where participants have the chance to win cash prizes – and all the profits go directly to Acorns Pre-School.

For a monthly subscription of £1 (12 months paid in advance) entrants can “sponsor” something that we find in our “Wilderness Garden”. Each month all the sponsored items are entered into a draw, with 50% of the subscriptions for that month given away in prizes.

The subscription year runs from March to February and any number of “Wilderness Garden” items can be sponsored. Friends and family from outside the school and Acorns are very welcome to take part.

If you would like to participate please either come to Acorns with your subscription money and choose a “Wilderness Garden” item from the list or call Claire Kennedy on 01249 890003 or email clairelkennedy@btinternet.com.

Also in March, we are planning to hold a table top sale. This will take place on Saturday, 10 March from 10am to 1pm (set up from 9am) in Christian Malford Village Hall. Start your Spring cleaning early - declutter and make some money too! A table costs £5, with all profits going to Acorns. Tea, coffee and bacon rolls will also be available to purchase. For further information, and to book a table, please contact Sarah Gingell on 01249 740239.

The money raised by events such as these is very important to Acorns Pre-School – it enables us to continue to invest in the Early Years Education for the children of our community. Your continued support is most appreciated.

From April 2012, we will start taking 2 year olds

New this year at Acorns Pre-school:

Optional hot home cooked meals using local produce

Forest School style learning on Wilderness Wednesday

Children can join us from two years old

To come and see for yourself please call Paula Jenkins on 07816 280810 or email acornspreschool.2009@googlemail.com.

Christian Malford Village Hall

A letter from Phil Hines

Dear All

Firstly I would like to thank all that have been involved in the running, fundraising and maintenance of the village hall during 2011 and the many hours, or days in some cases, that you have given to the hall, there are far too many of you to mention but you all know who you are. Special thanks to all that use the hall, especially the regular users and we look forward to your continued support during 2012, and finally to all the 100 Club members and those involved in collecting and organising the fantastic 100 Club Christmas Dinner, your support is crucial to help with the running costs of the hall – Thank you

Rebuild Update

The Committee are producing a schedule of events that will take place prior to any firm decision taking place as to the location of a future village hall as there seems to be some misunderstanding of the exact process the village hall committee has proposed to undertake. A bullet point version will be will be published shortly but please feel free to read past explanations that are on the village website under the village hall rebuild section. We shall endeavour to keep this updated regularly.

The ballot result from last year was that the preferred option from those that voted was the recreation ground. The ballot was always designed to assist the village hall rebuild committee to see where to target their efforts to investigate the feasibility of the chosen site. It was not a vote to confirm a site of a new hall. A further village vote has always been planned before any full planning was applied for.

With regard to planning and feasibility, the rebuild committee shall be re-submitting the outline planning application for the recreation ground. This is purely to get a definitive answer/comment from the Highways Dept with regard to the vehicular access to the recreation ground. It does not by any means signify that the rebuild will take place at the recreation ground. The design, layout and position of the building are purely for planning purposes and again by no means a confirmation of this. Without this application being processed we cannot further this stage of the process.

The committee have received a summary of the questions and issues that have been raised with the Parish Council with regard to the current site and recreation ground. Further information is being compiled from all the past research the committee has undertaken and again will shortly be published.

The village hall rebuild committee have invited the Parish Council to form a sub-committee to liaise over matters relating to the recreation ground including the feasibility for improving the entrance of the recreation ground, matters of law and the proposed improvements to equipment and additional facilities already planned by them for the recreation ground.

Regards,

Phil Hines
