Rising Sun Community Pub

The Rising Sun, originally built in the early 19th century, sits in the small lively village of Christian Malford in rural Wiltshire; it has had a mixed history, being at different times in its two hundred years a small brewery, a butchers shop, a farriers, a railway ticket office and, finally, a public house. Today, it is a ‘Free House’ which serves good beer and wine as well as excellent food in a recently refurbished, but old fashioned and charming, country inn.

In recent years its survival to serve its small but faithful community has become increasingly tenuous; starting in 1998 when, against all odds, the village fought to save the pub, and it narrowly escaped conversion from public house to private dwelling but remained closed for a year. Again on 1 October 2012 it closed overnight, without warning, and remained closed for almost 6 months. Then, faced with closure again in March 2017, it was time for decisive action; so, the story has a happy ending as on the 6th March 2017, The Rising Sun was taken over by a group of local villagers who set about returning it to being a proper country pub serving good, traditional, food.

This multi-talented group has undertaken a complete makeover and refurbishment of the Rising Sun turning it from a shabby, jaded venue to a comfortable, clean location that is a pleasure to relax and socialise in. Disabled access has been improved and baby changing facilities are now available. There is a beer garden, boules court and play area for supervised children. We welcome well-behaved dogs in the bar area and beer garden; however, for health and hygiene reasons, we cannot permit them in the lounge or restaurant areas.

The syndicate will ensure the pub continues to develop its strong reputation, attained during 2015 and 2016, this has seen it at the top end of Trip Advisor reviews for both Chippenham and Wiltshire. Trip Advisor awarded us the 2017 Certificate of Excellence for the consistent achievement of high ratings from travelers.

As a free house, The Rising Sun supplies a range of local and guest beers, ciders, lagers and spirits at competitive prices as well as a large selection of reasonably priced wines.

Serving good food is crucial to the survival and success of country pubs. As such, quality is our focus. We aim to produce menus that will appeal to both those seeking traditional ‘pub grub’ and for those looking for something a little bit special. There is now a children’s menu and a Sunday menu which seeks to offer alternative choices to those not wanting a traditional roast.

The Rising Sun offers a few ‘special’ events every month in addition to the popular ‘Burger Night’ on Tuesdays and ‘Fizz Friday’.

However, ultimately, the proof of the pudding is in the eating and drinking – you do not have to believe what we say; hear what some of our recent customers thought:
27 Jun 17: ‘WOW … After hearing that the pub had been taken over by local villagers I had to give this place another try. My previous visit was not the best but they have turned it around and congratulations. I ordered the Sirloin Steak (medium rare) and it was cooked to perfection and 100% full of flavour, also the restaurant staff couldn’t do enough to help ….’

29 Jun 17: ‘Family lunch booked at The Rising Sun was just what we needed. The new owners have changed the menus to cater for a range of budgets. Our party of six was well looked after with simple presentation and excellent flavours from ham egg and chips to pan fired scallops. Desserts have been legendary for a number of years and the creme brûlée, sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownie did not disappoint. The restaurant and bar are looking very smart following the redecoration and the service continues to be prompt and friendly’.

31 Jul 17: ‘We booked a table for 18 for a 90th birthday party meal. Everything about the meal was wonderful. The staff were all incredibly helpful and pleasant, the food was great – we really couldn’t have asked for more. We had a really fabulous time. Many thanks!’

But the story is far from over yet – the syndicate’s aim is to guarantee the Rising Sun’s future in Christian Malford for a very long time to come; to this end, they are currently investigating how best to buy the property to keep it as the focal point of the community.
